July 6th though 11th - the 20th anniversary manly outing. The first manly outing was in 1989, 6 guys, most of them new motorcycle riders, riding from Hinsdale IL to Lake Geneva WI. According to legend, it was a blast. Three of the original participants were on this excellent adventure - Dave Kuhny, Tim Hemstreet and Mark Hemstreet - these guys were barely legal to drink on the first outing. The Dual Sport trip was expertly organized by Dave Kuhny. Tim and Jerry Hemstreet came all the way from Illinois. My brother Jerry an I (Harry), took a (mostly) sedate route throughout the trip. The great thing about dual sporting in Colorado is that you can usually always find a challenging route or a comfortable (off road) route to the same destination. The 'boys' on the other hand, always sought out the most demanding and treacherous way from point A to Point B. The first day, they were thwarted by snow drifts on 2 of the high passes they attempted. Our first night was in Buena Vista, where Tim Hemstreet had some problems with altitude. Rest and lots of water cured him quickly and we were ready to roll early next morning. Our next destination town was Lake City - one of several off road meccas in Colorado. Dave reserved a cabin that slept 9 on the outskirts of town. Thursday was a big day as Dave, Tim, Gary and Brooks covered seven passes in 125 miles of riding. Jerry and I kept to the easier routes all day while Mark and Dan tackled the Alpine Loop via pickup truck. Two nights in Lake City, then a final night in Breckenridge where we were joined by families before departing Saturday morning.
