October 2009 New Mexico : Beautiful white gypsum sand, amazing caves, a delightful desert hike, birds with eight foot wingspans - all part of a quick, six day sight seeing trip to our close neighbor New Mexico. Dick and Kathy Parker invited us to join them on this mid-fall trip in early September. We love to travel, and love to travel with the Parkers, so it was a natural for us. First stop was White Sands National Monument - near Alamagordo. White Sands and the surrounding area have a rich history in development of both our space program and nuclear arsenal. The Trinity site (first atomic bomb blast) is a few miles north of the national park. From White Sands, we ventured to Carlsbad Caverns. There are 116 caves in the National Park, highlighted by the 'Big Room' in the main, tourist accessible cavern. From Carlsbad, we were off to our third national park, Guadalupe Mountains National Park (in Texas) and a great afternoon hike along McKittrick Canyon Trail. After an overnight in Las Cruces, we started our journey north with a stop at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife reserve. This 57,000 acre reserve is dedicated as a stopping point for thousands of birds - either wintering here, or stopping on their migration. The most spectacular residents are the Sandhill Cranes - which have wingspans of over eight feet!

Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta 2009 : This was our second year at the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta. In 2008, almost all of the events we could attend were canceled due to wind. This year, everything we planned to attend happened! This compilation of pictures and videos comprises three events:

Thursday morning: Special Shapes Ascension - Special Shapes (there were 85) are the cartoon like balloons - amazing and very colorful!
Friday evening: Special Shapes Glowdeo - the balloons do not fly, but light up via their gas burners.
Saturday morning: Mass Ascension - all balloons, including special shapes - fly - a most amazing spectacle.

The Ascensions all happen at dawn, so you will note that the initial few pictures were taken in partial darkness. There were approximately 600 balloons, 800,000 spectators - although not all attend every event. I would guess that there were in excess of 100,000 people at each of the events we attended. As last year, Phil and Janet Kolehmainen were our wonderful hosts. We were joined on Friday by Ralph and Judy Mack, who provided their own lodging in their cute little travel trailer - "The Baseball". I tried to cut down my stash of 450 digital photos to a reasonable number - 286, plus 3 videos. These are just my pictures, with a couple from Ralph and Judy.

Dual Sport Trip - July 2009 - 20th anniversary Manly outing : July 6th though 11th - the 20th anniversary manly outing. The first manly outing was in 1989, 6 guys, most of them new motorcycle riders, riding from Hinsdale IL to Lake Geneva WI. According to legend, it was a blast. Three of the original participants were on this excellent adventure - Dave Kuhny, Tim Hemstreet and Mark Hemstreet - these guys were barely legal to drink on the first outing. The Dual Sport trip was expertly organized by Dave Kuhny. Tim and Jerry Hemstreet came all the way from Illinois. My brother Jerry an I (Harry), took a (mostly) sedate route throughout the trip. The great thing about dual sporting in Colorado is that you can usually always find a challenging route or a comfortable (off road) route to the same destination. The 'boys' on the other hand, always sought out the most demanding and treacherous way from point A to Point B. The first day, they were thwarted by snow drifts on 2 of the high passes they attempted. Our first night was in Buena Vista, where Tim Hemstreet had some problems with altitude. Rest and lots of water cured him quickly and we were ready to roll early next morning. Our next destination town was Lake City - one of several off road meccas in Colorado. Dave reserved a cabin that slept 9 on the outskirts of town. Thursday was a big day as Dave, Tim, Gary and Brooks covered seven passes in 125 miles of riding. Jerry and I kept to the easier routes all day while Mark and Dan tackled the Alpine Loop via pickup truck. Two nights in Lake City, then a final night in Breckenridge where we were joined by families before departing Saturday morning.

December Walk 12-19-2008 : Got up this morning (12/19/2008) and we were in a world of fog. About 10:00 am and the sun came out and the temperature got all the way up to 19 degrees. I normally walk 1-2 hours every day and as long as it's not windy, I walk outside - pretty much the same route every day. Today I put the camera (our little guy - the SD700) in my pocket - because the trees looked really cool.

These pictures are what I saw today. The walk is always very scenic, but today was special.
